







Columbia Hospital, JFK Medical Center and Palms West Hospital are all located within Palm Beach
County and are part of the HCA Healthcare family of hospitals. Columbia Hospital is a 250-bed acute
care teaching hospital located in West Palm Beach. Exposure dermatopathologists give residents
opportunity to facilitate access to dermatopathological interpretation. As a primary teaching affiliate of
Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Columbia Hospital has direct access to
one of the world's most exhaustive online collections of medical texts and journals. Our residents and
faculty have real-time access to virtually all available electronic medical reference materials. JFK
Medical Center is a 424-bed acute care hospital located in the suburban town of Atlantis. Palms West
is a 175-bed acute care hospital serving a younger population in rural Palm Beach County. Using the
resources of our entire clinical campus, Palms West Hospital hosts osteopathic residency training
programs in Pediatrics, General Surgery and Emergency Medicine. Our dermatology residents have
access to inpatient consultations, as well as educational resources in each of these inpatient facilities
as well as the West Palm Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Our dermatology program has been designed in partnership with the West Palm Beach Veterans
Administration Medical Center. This is a state-of-the-art 175-bed acute care facility with high-volume
outpatient clinics. Full time dermatologists with extensive academic backgrounds have been assigned
as primary attendings in our dermatology program. They treat a wide variety of pathology ranging from
psoriasis to infiltrating basal cell carcinoma, with annual patient volume in the thousands.
The Morse Geriatric Center is a nationally recognized 280-bed skilled nursing facility with experience in
training both allopathic and osteopathic residents with Harvard faculty. Residents have exposure to a
broad range of geriatric-oriented dermatological pathology.
Columbia Hospital has the experience of providing post-graduate osteopathic education for over 21
years. Our academic center's Regional Director of Medical Education, Bradley Feuer, DO, JD, has the
experience of being an
osteopathic Director of Medical Education since 1991. Columbia Hospitals' Director of Medical
Education, David Stern, DO, is also the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency and has
been involved in osteopathic post-graduate medical education for nearly 20 years. Dermatology
Residency Program Director, Layne Nisenbaum, DO, is a well-respected dermatologist, leader in the
community, and philanthropist, with an unselfish and altruistically-motivated drive towards leading this
program towards its high-quality goals.
Dermatology Residency Associate Program Director, Brent Schillinger, MD, is a well-known physician
leader as well as respected dermatologist. Both Drs. Feuer and Schillinger are well recognized by the
local community, having been regular on-air medical experts for our local ABC and CBS affiliates. In
addition, both Drs. Feuer and Schillinger have served as presidents of the Palm Beach County Medical
Society. Dr. Schillinger has further held leadership positions in the Florida Medical Association, and Dr.
Feuer has further held leadership positions in the Palm Beach
County Bar Association.
Our program also has regular, formal sessions with dermatopathologist Michael Nowak, MD, as well as
the resources of Ameripath's regional dermatopathology center, under the direction of Les Rosen, MD
and Carlos
Nousari, MD.
Members of the Palm Beach County dermatology community have embraced our educational
endeavors, and have opened their offices to our residents in training. These physicians include:
Program Director Layne Nisenbaum, DO;Associate Program Director Brent Schillinger, MD (offering the
services of a practice of eight physicians with six offices throughout Palm Beach County); John
Strasswimmer, MD, whose practice includes Mohs surgery; Steven Shapiro, MD; Jason Green, MD;
Igor Chaplick, MD, Jeffrey Martin, DO; and Albert LaTorra, DO, Medical Director of Columbia Hospitals
Wound Care Center.
Dermatology residents receive dermatology lectures from associate program director, Dr. Schillinger.
This lecture is independent of textbook and journal review. Current concepts in dermatology are
discussed. Journal Club is held monthly, moderated by Dr. Schillinger. All faculty members attend and
join in the reviews and discussion. Dermatopathology lectures are held weekly, and given by Dr.
Nowak. Book reviews are held weekly, with one chapter reviewed per week from Andrews with Dr.
Marchant and one chapter from Levers with Dr. Nowak. Kodachromes are also reviewed once a week
with Dr. Marchant
