HOURS AND HOLIDAYS/LEAVE OF ABSENCE; CALL AND CLINIC SWITCHING: OFF DUTY

The intern/resident's day will usually begin at 7:00 A.M. and continue for 12 hours, except during n= ight duty when the schedule begins at 7:00 P.M. and ends at = 7:00 A.M.

The intern/resident is NOT TO LEAVE THE HOSPITAL OR ROTATION DURING DUTY unless so granted by the Regional Director of Medical Education or his designee. Personal affairs mu= st be attended to during off hours. In the event of illness, special holidays, or the need for educational program= s, a time will be determined by the Regional DME on a one-on-one basis since it = is impossible to make provisions for all situations that may occur.

The intern/resident may be permitted to continue his or her training to complet= ion if he becomes physically disabled during the internship/residency period. If given a leave of absence for il= lness, at the discretion of the Program Director and Regional DME, the intern/resi= dent may continue for the required months when they are able to return to duty.<= o:p>

When a resident finds it necessary to switch on = call or clinic responsibilities, the following procedure is to be followed:=

1.&n= bsp; = ; Arrange the switch with a fellow resident.

2.&n= bsp; = ; Complete a “Time Off” form explaining the switch and have the covering resident sign.

3.&n= bsp; = ; Obtain appr= oval and signature from the Chief Resident and the Clinic Director (if applicabl= e).

4.&n= bsp; = ; Hand the fo= rm in to the Medical Education Office for approval by the ADME and Regional DME thirty days in advance.

5.&n= bsp; = ; All attendings, including those in the clinic, the Chief Resident and other Interns/Residents must be informed and reminded of the change in coverage.

6.&n= bsp; = ; Consider an= d deal with impact on clinic patients’ care - work with office managers and personnel at the continuity of care site.

All changes must have thirty- (30) day prior app= roval from the Regional DME.

Requests for changes in call and clinic schedules should be made in writing at least one month in advance.<= /p>

During hours off, personal activities are the intern’s/resident’s own concern. However, housestaff should keep in mind that their actions are= a reflection upon our profession and this institution. Accordingly egregious behavior may subject the intern/resident to disciplinary action.=

As of the time of printing, Intern salary is $38,500 per year, and first-year (OGME-II) Resident’s salary is $40,000 per year with second year (OGME-III) stipend of $42,000 per year.&nb= sp; Housestaf= f will be biweekly and paychecks will be distributed through the Medical Education Office.

GENERAL: PBCGME/Palms West Hospital or PBCGME/Columbia Hospital will provide the resident with:<= /p>

1. &= nbsp; Two (2) white medi= cal lab coats,

2. &= nbsp; A pager and on-call system.

3. &= nbsp; An annual continui= ng education allowance together with paid leave, subject to advance approval by the DME, to attend continuing education programs as follows:

4. Funds and days may accumulate from year to year,= with the permission of the DME, but will not be paid out at the end of residency. In all cases, all = funds must be expended by April 30^th of the senior year.

= MEMBERSHIP: Housestaff are required to become a member of t= he American Osteopathic Association, and the Osteopathic College= of their specialty training. Program Directors, with the consent of the Regional DME, may require further memberships. Dues for= these memberships will be provided by PBCGME/Columbia or <= st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Palms West Hospital. Failure to hold membership in the = AOA and the osteopathic specialty college during internship/residency will resu= lt in loss of credit for training. Therefore as soon as they are in receipt of these membership cards, = they should provide a copy to the Office of Medical Education. This will be kept= in the housestaff’s personal credentials fil= e and available to the AOA Office of Hospital Affairs. FOMA membership is also recommende= d and is free of charge. Receipt of documentation of membership should also be made a part of the personal credentials file.

HEALTH INSURANCE: As an employee of PBCGME/Columbia or Palms<= /st1:PlaceName> West Hospital, group health insurance coverage will be offered pursuant to Hospital policy= for elective benefits.

MALPRACTICE INSURANCE: The Hospital will cover = housestaff for all work assumed within the institutio= n and on assigned rotations and for all a= ctivities required as a participant in the resident training program while working in PBCGME/ Columbia or Palms West Hospital, affiliated hospitals, cli= nics and required elective rotations which are part of the approved training program. Since "moonlighting" is = not permitted in the first year and is discouraged in the second and third year= s, Professional liability insurance is NOT provided for any moonlighting activities even if participation is approved by the Regional Director of Medical Education or Medical Education Office.

LIFE INSURANCE: As an employee of PBCGME/Columbia or Palms West Hospital, group life insurance wil= l be offered pursuant to Hospital policy for elective benefits.

HOUSING: The intern/resident (and their families) will need to provide for their own accommodations. However, the Hospital will make every effort to help housestaff find reasonable and proper accommodations prior to the beginning of trainin= g.

MEALS: Meals are provided while on duty. No food is to be taken out of the hospital or distributed to other family, friends, or staff members. One helping per meal-time is provi= ded. Family members are not provided food. Bottled beverage= s and frozen desserts are not complimentary.
