The
Residency Programs at PBCGME are full time employment commitments that
challenge the resident to grow and mature in medical knowledge, clinical
experience, and personal skills that are necessary for the capable practice=
of
primary care medicine.
During
the years of postgraduate medical education, it is the resident’s
responsibility to devote their full efforts to the program. Off hours moonlighting employment =
may
present the resident with opportunities for financial gain and to test his/=
her
medical skills. At no time may
moonlighting activities conflict with or diminish the resident’s
responsibilities to the residency program.=
Outside employment (moonlighting) by res=
idents
may be done only with approval of the Program Director who will assure that=
no
conflicts exist with the program requirements.
The
following guidelines will be strictly enforced relative to Moonlighting:
1. &=

No resident may
moonlight from

The
resident must be in good standing within the residency program.
3.
All
residency requirements, institutional requirements, logs, evaluations, and
medical records must be up-to-date.
4.
No resident=
may
moonlight while “on call.”
5.
No resident=
may
moonlight within nine (9) hours of beginning “duty.” Duty commences at
6.
No resident=
may
pursue moonlighting activity that will represent the program in a negative
fashion.
7.
The DME/Pro=
gram
Director may limit an individual resident’s moonlighting activity if =
the
DME/Program Director thinks the resident’s activities are interfering
with the residents learning or responsibilities.
8.
First year
Residents are asked not to moonlight during the first two (2) months, as th=
ey
become oriented to the program.
9.
While
moonlighting, residents are not covered by the professional liability insur=
ance
of the hospital. Residents need to obtain proper part-time malpractice
insurance before she/he starts to work.&nb=
sp;
The Residency Program's insurance coverage does not extend beyond the
duties of the Resident.
10. The requirements of the Residency Program supers=
eded
any moonlighting commitments.
11. The appropriate forms must be completed and
approved by the Residency Director before the Resident can start to
moonlight.
12. Moonlighting will be limited to no more than 24 =
hours
per week.
13. Residents must notify the Program Director 30 da=
ys
before accepting any moonlighting position.
14. Resident should not work more than 24 consecutive
hours.
15. Any interference with Residency duties due to
moonlighting will result in suspension of moonlighting privileges.
16. Interns are NOT permitted to moonlight.
17. A Program Director may elect to prohibit all res=
idents
in a given program from moonlighting, if in the best academic interests of =
the
Program.
18. These guidelines may be changed or amended at the
discretion of the program director.
19. Any other criteria established by the
institution, program, DME, Program Director or OPTI must be satisfied.
20. Exceptions to the above guidelines can only be m=
ade by
the program director.
